12 Rivers

Gameplay Overview
On the surface, 12 Rivers looks like a cute gimmick, but it packs a surprising amount of tactical depth. The game features a striking, slanted board where physical marbles roll down a mountain. Players place traps along the riverways to catch these marbles, trying to prioritize specific colors to deliver to their friendly alpaca and fulfill unique endgame scoring criteria for local villagers.
The catch? You can only trap one marble at a time. This forces a tense push-your-luck decision: do you lock in a guaranteed marble high up the mountain, or do you risk waiting to see what makes it all the way down to the lake at the bottom, where you can sweep up everything that wasn't intercepted? Powerful "fairy tokens" offer game-breaking abilities that let you bend the rules—allowing you to shift components or take double rewards. It is a highly strategic, kinetic puzzle where players compete for resources in a beautifully fluid environment.

Review
We were both incredibly surprised by this one. We fully expected it to be a pure gimmick with nothing for the brain to chew on, but we were completely wrong. We played it at a game convention at a 4-player count with two strangers, and it was the perfect icebreaker—we laughed, puzzled it out, and had a wonderful time. It features great pacing where you're never quite sure who is winning until the end.
The only minor downside is component longevity. You are constantly slotting wooden components into a foam board, and even with gentle, careful play, we noticed some early dings and wear. We aren't entirely sure how well the board will hold up over dozens of plays, but the gameplay itself is an absolute delight for lighter brain days or showing friends the magic of modern board gaming.
